Dirt Bike for an 11 Year Old: Does a 50cc Still Fit, or Is It Time for Electric?

3 min de lectura

Short answer: For most 11 year olds who still fit under 170 lb, a 50cc gas mini is still the right bike, and it costs far less than going electric too soon. Ours is $300, or $350 total with a helmet, with free shipping to all 50 states and same day pickup in Tempe. It is automatic with no gears, it has a pull start, and a parent can set the speed lower with a limiter while a child learns. If your rider is already tall for the bike or close to the weight limit, read the electric section below before you order.

Why a 50cc can still fit an 11 year old

Our 50cc is made for ages about 5 to 13 and riders up to 170 lb, so an 11 year old is still inside the range it was built for. At 11, most kids have the balance and focus for a real gas bike, and a bike they already fit gives them room to build skill instead of fighting a bike that is too big. Our age guide walks through the signs parents look for, and our guide to teaching a kid to ride covers the first ride in plain steps.

Size comes before age

Two kids who are both 11 can be very different in height and strength. Check fit first with the size guide by age and height. A rider should reach the controls with confidence and be able to hold the bike up at a stop. If your rider is near the top of the fit range, compare this guide with the 10 year old guide and the 12 year old guide before you choose. Black and blue are the most asked for colors, with green, red and yellow in the same 50cc collection.

Speed a parent can control

Top speed is 32 mph, but a new rider does not start there. The speed limiter guide shows how the limiter screw lets a parent set a slower pace for the first rides and open it up as skills grow. The how fast guide explains what that speed means in real riding.

What the $300 covers

The bike is a 50cc two stroke with pull start and automatic riding, so there is no clutch and no gear lever to learn. Read the cost guide for what is included and what counts as an extra. The beginner kid guide and the buying guide for parents help you compare before you order.

Gear for day one

A helmet is not optional for an 11 year old. Our safety gear guide lists what a child needs, and the $350 total covers the bike with a helmet so you are not shopping for gear after the bike arrives.

What shows up and what to do first

The bike arrives about 90 percent built. You fit the front wheel and handlebar with included tools and a video. It is off road only and has no title. Before the first ride, use the setup guide and the fuel mix guide. The bike comes with 1 year parts support through the manufacturer. Our first dirt bike experience guide shows what day one looks like for a new family.

When electric makes more sense

If your 11 year old is already over the fit range for the 50cc, or will pass 170 lb very soon, the step up is electric. The Sykeruns X5 is $975 and the Sykeruns X7 is $1350. Most riders who outgrow the 50cc start with the X5.

We are a family owned mini moto and ebike club in Tempe. If your 11 year old still fits the 50cc, start there at $300, set the limiter low for the first rides, and save the electric step up for when size says it is time.
