Short answer. The 50cc gas mini holds a rider up to 170 lb and costs $300, or $350 total with a helmet. The Sykeruns X5 holds a rider up to 265 lb and costs $975. The Sykeruns X7 holds a rider up to 330 lb and costs $1350. All three ship free to all 50 states, and local buyers can pick up the same day in Tempe.
Why the limit matters
A weight limit is the top rider weight the bike was built to carry. A rider over the limit is too heavy for that bike, even if they can sit on it. Pick a bike where the rider is under the limit with room to grow, because kids gain weight while they own the bike. That one check stops most wrong orders. Weight is only part of fit, so check height too in our size guide by height.
Under 170 lb: start with the 50cc
For a rider under 170 lb, the 50cc is the place to start. It is a 50cc two stroke bike with a pull start and automatic riding, with no gears and no clutch to learn. Top speed is 32 mph, and a speed limiter lets a parent set it slower while a kid learns. It suits ages about 5 to 13. Colors are black, blue, green, red and yellow, and black and blue are the most asked for.
Over 170 lb and up to 265 lb: the X5
A rider over 170 lb has outgrown the 50cc. The X5 fits riders about 4 ft to 5 ft 11 in and up to 265 lb. It has a 3000W motor, a top speed of 50 mph, and three gears at about 15, 27 and 50 mph, so a new rider can start in the slow gear. Charge time is about 5 to 6 hours. If the rider is a teen, read our electric guide for teens, and if you are torn between the two electrics, read Sykeruns X5 vs X7.
Over 265 lb and up to 330 lb: the X7
A rider over 265 lb needs the X7. It fits riders about 4 ft 8 in to 6 ft 3 in and up to 330 lb. It has a 5500W motor, a top speed of 56 mph, and three gears at about 25, 39 and 56 mph. Charge time is about 6 to 7 hours. The extra power is also the right call for hills and deep sand. Adult riders can read our electric guide for adults, and every electric buyer should read our range guide before planning a long ride.
Over 330 lb
Plain answer: none of the bikes we sell is built for a rider over 330 lb. Do not buy a bike that is under the rider and hope it works out. A bike that is too small for the rider is not a good buy at any price.
Height still counts
Weight alone does not pick the bike. A rider can be under a weight limit and still be too tall for the bike, with knees up high and feet that cannot reach the ground well at a stop. Check age and height together in our age guide, and riders near the top of the 50cc fit range should read our 13 year old guide before they order.
What shows up and what gear to add
Every bike here is about 90 percent built. What is left is the front wheel and the handlebar, fitted with the included tools and a video, as our setup guide shows. Each bike is off road only and has no title. Each one comes with 1 year parts support through the manufacturer. For an electric bike, read our battery charging guide before the first charge. For gear, a helmet comes first, and our safety gear guide lists the full set. On the 50cc, the $350 total with a helmet covers the bike and the helmet together.
The bottom line
Pick by weight first, then by height, then by price. Our cost guide lays out what each price covers, our buying guide helps parents pick a first bike, and the full electric collection shows both electric bikes side by side. We are a family owned mini moto and ebike club in Tempe, and we would rather sell you the bike that fits than the bike that costs more.
