What Age Should a Child Start Riding a Dirt Bike?

What Age Should a Child Start Riding a Dirt Bike?

Short answer: most kids are ready for a 50cc dirt bike around age 5 or 6, and the 50cc suits riders up to about 13 or 170 lb. The real test is physical, not the birthday. If they can plant both feet at a 24 inch seat height, hold the bike up, and squeeze the front brake hard enough to lock the wheel, they are ready.

The three tests that decide it

  1. Feet down. Sitting on the bike, the balls of both feet reach the ground. Seat height on the 50cc is about 24 inches.
  2. Brake grip. One or two fingers on the front lever, squeezed hard enough to stop the wheel turning. If the lever wins, they cannot stop the bike and they are not ready yet.
  3. Following instructions. Can they stop when you raise a hand, and stay inside a boundary you point at? A motorized vehicle is not the place to find out that they cannot.

A 5 year old who passes all three is more ready than an 8 year old who fails one.

What the age ranges actually look like

Age Usually right Why
3 to 5 Balance bike or pedal bike Balance and steering come first, and they come cheaper without an engine
5 to 13 50cc gas, $300 Automatic, no clutch, no gears, adjustable limiter, 170 lb limit
About 4 ft and up Sykerun X5 electric, $975 3000W, 50 mph, 53 mile range, 265 lb limit, fits about 4 ft to 5 ft 11
About 4 ft 8 and up Sykerun X7 electric, $1,350 5500W, 56 mph, 60 mile range, 330 lb limit, fits about 4 ft 8 to 6 ft 3

Height and weight beat age every time. Our size guide for 6, 8 and 10 year olds works through the common cases.

Why a 50cc works for a young beginner

It is automatic. No clutch lever and no gears, so the rider learns throttle and brakes and nothing else. That is about the right amount of new information for a five or six year old.

It has an adjustable limiter screw on the carburetor. The bike will do 32 mph, but with that screw turned in, it will do walking pace and no amount of twisting changes that. You give speed back a quarter turn at a time as they earn it. Details in our guide to the 50cc dirt bike speed limiter.

Disc brakes front and rear mean the stopping power is there when a small hand pulls the lever. Inverted forks and an adjustable rear shock let you set preload for a light rider so the bike does not pogo under them.

Signs to wait a few months

  • They tiptoe the bike and cannot hold it up when it leans.
  • They cannot pull the front brake lever with real force.
  • They go quiet and tense when the engine starts. Nervous is fine, frozen is not.
  • They struggle to stay inside a boundary on a pedal bike.
  • They are only interested because someone else wants them to be.

Waiting six months costs nothing. A scary first ride can end riding for good.

Starting later is fine

Plenty of riders start at 9, 11 or 13. Older beginners usually pick it up faster because their coordination and attention span are further along. The only thing that changes is size, and the 50cc still works up to about 13 or 170 lb.

Past that, a taller or heavier teen fits an electric better. The X5 carries 265 lb, the X7 carries 330 lb, and neither needs fuel mixing. If you are weighing the two paths, gas vs electric dirt bikes for kids lays out the differences.

Whatever age you start, start the same way

  • Helmet, goggles, gloves and over the ankle boots, every ride, no exceptions.
  • Limiter screwed in for the first sessions.
  • Flat open ground, dirt or grass, no roads and no pavement.
  • An adult present, always, for any rider under 18.
  • Sessions of 20 to 30 minutes, ending while they are still having fun.
  • Straight lines and stops before turns, turns before speed.

Our safety gear guide covers what to buy first. The bike is $350 with a helmet if you want the bundle.

Frequently asked questions

What age is a 50cc dirt bike for?

About 5 to 13, with a 170 lb rider limit and a seat height around 24 inches. Fit and readiness matter more than the number.

Can a 4 year old ride a dirt bike?

Usually not this one. Four year olds rarely reach the ground at a 24 inch seat height or pull the brake lever hard enough. A balance bike for a year is the better move.

Is 10 too old for a 50cc?

No. A 10 year old inside 170 lb who fits the seat height is fine on a 50cc. A tall or heavy 10 year old will be happier on a Sykerun X5.

How fast does a 50cc go for a beginner?

As fast as you let it. Top speed is 32 mph, but the limiter screw sets whatever ceiling you want, starting at walking pace.

Do they need a license or a permit?

No. These are off road only, with no title and no plate, so no license is involved. That also means no street riding at all. Private property with permission or a legal riding area.
