Start with fit, not age
Thirteen can mean very different sizes. Use our size guide and our age guide first, and compare with our 12 year old guide if the rider is right on the edge. If the rider can get the balls of both feet down at a stop and is under 170 lb, the 50cc still fits. If not, electric is the honest next step.
When the 50cc is still the right buy
The 50cc is a two stroke with pull start and automatic riding with no gears and no clutch. It is made for ages about 5 to 13 and riders up to 170 lb. Top speed is 32 mph, and a parent can set the speed limiter slower for the first rides. Read more in our how fast guide. When electric makes more sense

The X5 has a 3000W motor, a top speed of 50 mph, gear steps at about 15, 27 and 50 mph, and fits riders about 4 ft to 5 ft 11 in and up to 265 lb, with a charge time of about 5 to 6 hours. The X7 has a 5500W motor, a top speed of 56 mph, gear steps at about 25, 39 and 56 mph, and fits riders about 4 ft 8 in to 6 ft 3 in and up to 330 lb, with a charge time of about 6 to 7 hours, and it pulls harder on hills and deep sand.
