Sykeruns X5 vs X7: Which One Should You Buy?

Short answer. If the rider is under about 5 ft 10 in and you want the cheapest electric that still does real speed off road, buy the X5 at $975. If the rider is a full grown adult, heavier than 265 lbs, or you want the extra pull for hills and sand, buy the X7 at $1,350. Both are brand new, both ship free to all 50 states, and both are off road only.

If you are searching for this as Sykerun X5 vs X7 rather than Sykeruns, you are in the right place. The maker spells it SYKERUNS. Plenty of listings drop the s. Same two bikes.

The three things that actually decide it

1. The rider, not the budget

This is the one that settles most orders before price ever comes up. The X5 carries a rider up to 265 lbs and fits roughly 4 ft to 5 ft 11 in. The X7 carries up to 330 lbs and fits roughly 4 ft 8 in to 6 ft 3 in.

So if the rider is over 265 lbs, the decision is made for you. It is the X7, and buying the X5 to save $375 means riding a bike past what the frame and the suspension were built for. If the rider is under 4 ft 8 in, the decision is made the other way. The X7 is too much bike to get a foot down on, and a rider who cannot plant a foot cannot stop safely on loose dirt.

Between 4 ft 8 in and 5 ft 11 in, and under 265 lbs, both fit. That is when the next two points matter.

2. Torque, not top speed

The headline difference looks like 50 mph against 56 mph. Six mph. On dirt, in a field, with a helmet on, you will almost never use it.

The difference you feel on every ride is torque: 146 N.m on the X5 against 220 N.m on the X7. That is what gets you up a loose hill without the motor bogging, what pulls through sand instead of digging in, and what carries a heavier rider from a standstill without a run up. If you ride flat open ground, the X5 has plenty. If you ride hills, sand, or anything where you are often starting from stopped on a slope, the X7 is the one you will be glad you bought.

3. The $375 between them

$975 against $1,350. Both of those include shipping to any of the 50 states, so the number on the page is the number you pay.

Worth knowing: Sykeruns lists the X5 at $1,199 and the X7 at $1,999 on their own site. The gap between our two bikes is $375. The gap between their two is $800. So if you were only ever going to stretch for the bigger bike at the maker's price, the X7 here is the cheaper stretch by a long way.

Range, honestly

The factory sheets say up to 53 miles for the X5 and up to 60 for the X7. Those numbers come from low speed running on flat ground, which is not how anybody rides one of these.

Riding off road, expect about 20 to 25 miles from the X5 and about 22 to 31 from the X7. Plan around the lower number in each pair and you will never be pushing a 126 lb bike home. We go through where those figures come from in the Sykeruns X5 review and the Sykeruns X7 review.

Notice that the real world gap is much smaller than the claimed gap. If range is your deciding factor, neither bike is going to feel like a big upgrade over the other. Decide on fit and torque instead.

What if this is actually for a kid?

Then neither of these is the bike. The X5 starts at about 4 ft of rider height, and the first gear still does about 15 mph, which is a lot for a six year old on their first day.

For a young kid, our 50cc gas minis are $300 and suit roughly ages 5 to 13, with a governor screw on the carburetor so a parent can slow it right down. For a bigger kid who has outgrown that, the 60cc double exhaust is $380 and suits about 9 and up. If you are not sure, our guide on what size dirt bike fits a 6, 8 or 10 year old sizes it by height rather than age, which is the part most people get backwards.

Questions

Is the Sykerun X5 the same as the Sykeruns X5?

Yes. The maker spells it SYKERUNS. Plenty of searches and resale listings drop the s. Same bike, same specs, same frame.

Are either of them street legal?

No. Off road use only. Not street legal and does not come with a title. Where you can legally ride one depends on your state, and we walk through all 50 in where can you legally ride a dirt bike.

How much assembly is there?

Ships mostly assembled. You put on the front wheel and handlebar at home. Tools and a video are included. Most people are done in 20 to 30 minutes, and there is no fuel to mix on either one.

What happens if a part turns up defective?

Send us a short video by text or email. Plugged by 50CC does not cover or pay for warranty. If a part is defective, we contact the manufacturer on your behalf and get the correct part sent to you free. We are the people who chase the factory so you do not have to.

Can two people share one?

Yes, and it is a real reason to size up. Pick the bike that fits the heavier and taller of the two riders, then use the gears to keep it tame for the other one.

Which one should I buy if I still cannot decide?

Text us at 623 320 8984 with the rider's height and weight and where you plan to ride. We get back to you the same day, and we will tell you to buy the cheaper bike when that is the right answer.
