Electric Dirt Bike Range: How Far Can the X5 and X7 Really Go?

4 min read

Short answer. Plan on about 20 to 25 miles of real off road riding from the Sykeruns X5 at $975 and about 22 to 31 miles from the Sykeruns X7 at $1350. The factory numbers are higher. This guide uses the lower real numbers so you can plan a ride and get back without pushing the bike home. Both bikes ship free to all 50 states and both are ready for same day pickup in Tempe.

Factory numbers and real numbers

The X5 has a 48V 20Ah lithium battery and a factory range of up to 53 miles. That number comes from low speed riding on flat ground. Real off road riding gives about 20 to 25 miles.

The X7 has a 60V 27Ah lithium battery and a factory range of up to 60 miles. Riders who track real rides report about 22 to 31 miles. Plan around the lower number for both bikes.

Our full Sykeruns X5 review and our full Sykeruns X7 review lay out the specs, the price and what each bike costs to own.

What changes your range

Throttle use comes first. Hard pulls in the top gear use the battery fast. The X5 gear steps are about 15 mph, 27 mph and 50 mph. The X7 gear steps are about 25 mph, 39 mph and 56 mph. Riding in a lower gear on flat ground stretches a charge.

Rider weight comes next. The X5 fits riders about 4 ft to 5 ft 11 in and up to 265 lb. The X7 fits riders about 4 ft 8 in to 6 ft 3 in and up to 330 lb. A heavier rider will see the low end of the range.

Ground matters too. Hard flat ground gives the best range. Hills and deep sand use more power, and the X7 with 5500W and 220 N.m of torque handles that ground better than the X5 with 3000W. Stop and start riding also uses more battery than a steady pace.

Read our battery charging guide before the first charge. Good charging habits help the battery last and help each charge go further.

How to plan a ride

Start with the real number and leave room to get back. If you ride the X5, plan a loop well under 20 miles for a first ride and learn what your rider and your ground give you. If you ride the X7, plan a first loop well under 22 miles for the same reason.

Wear full gear on every ride. Our safety gear guide covers the helmet and the rest of the gear. Ride only where riding is allowed. Our Arizona riding guide and our electric dirt bikes in Phoenix guide list the local picture for Phoenix and Tempe riders.

Charge time between rides

The X5 takes about 5 to 6 hours to charge. The X7 takes about 6 to 7 hours. Most owners charge overnight and ride the next day. That timing is a big part of picking electric, and our gas vs electric guide covers both sides in plain words.

Which bike if range matters most

The real range gap between the two bikes is small, so range alone is not a strong reason to pick one over the other. Pick by fit and by ground first. Our X5 vs X7 guide puts both bikes side by side. Our teen electric guide, our adult electric guide and our beginner electric guide each pick by rider type.

If the price is the deciding point, our under $1000 electric guide covers the X5 and our under $1500 electric guide covers the X7. You can also see both bikes in the electric dirt bikes collection.

For a younger kid who wants to ride all day

A gas bike works in a different way. You add more fuel and the ride keeps going that same day, with no charge time before a ride. Our 50cc gas mini is $300, or $350 total with a helmet. It is a 50cc two stroke with pull start and automatic riding with no gears and no clutch, for ages about 5 to 13 and up to 170 lb, with a top speed of 32 mph and a speed limiter a parent can set slower. Our cost guide covers the full price picture.

What shows up

Each electric bike is about 90 percent built. You fit the front wheel and the handlebar with the included tools and the video. Each bike is off road only and has no title. Each bike has 1 year parts support through the manufacturer.
