Sur Ron Alternatives Under $2,000: What You Actually Give Up

If you are here, you have probably already looked at a Sur Ron, seen the price, and gone looking for something cheaper. So let us start with the number.

A 2026 Sur Ron Light Bee X sells for about $4,499 at a US dealer, marked down from $4,999 (Creature Racing). Our biggest electric, the Sykeruns X7, is $1,350 shipped free. That is a $3,149 difference, and anybody telling you the two bikes are the same thing is lying to you.

What follows is the honest version: what you keep, what you give up, and who should just save up for the Sur Ron instead.

The numbers, side by side

Sur Ron Light Bee X, 2026 Sykeruns X7 Sykeruns X5
Price About $4,499 $1,350 shipped free $975 shipped free
Motor 10,000W peak 5,500W 3,000W
Battery 72V 35Ah, about 2,520 Wh 60V 27Ah, about 1,620 Wh 48V 20Ah, about 960 Wh
Top speed About 50 mph 56 mph 50 mph
Claimed range About 50 miles Up to 60 miles Up to 53 miles
Weight About 130 lbs 143 lbs 126 lbs
Max rider Not published 330 lbs 265 lbs

Sur Ron motor and battery figures by model year come from Wikipedia's Sur Ron page, and the 2026 price and claimed range from the dealer listing above. The brand writes its own name SURRON, and you will also see it as Sur Ron and Surron. Same bikes.

The one spec where they are close, and why that is misleading

Look at top speed. The X7 is listed at 56 mph and the Sur Ron at about 50. On paper our cheaper bike wins.

Do not buy on that. Top speed is the cheapest number on an electric to hit. Gear it tall enough and almost any motor will spin up to a big number on flat hard pack for a few seconds. What it does not tell you is whether the bike holds that speed, whether it still pulls at the top of a hill, or how far you get before the battery is flat.

The number that actually separates these bikes is battery capacity. Volts times amp hours gives you watt hours, which is the real size of the tank:

  • Sur Ron Light Bee X: 72 x 35 = about 2,520 Wh
  • Sykeruns X7: 60 x 27 = about 1,620 Wh
  • Sykeruns X5: 48 x 20 = about 960 Wh

So the Sur Ron carries roughly 1.5 times the X7's battery and about 2.6 times the X5's. That is the honest gap, and it is the main thing your extra $3,000 is buying.

What you actually give up at $1,350

Five real things, and we would rather you hear them from us than find out later.

1. Battery size, which means ride time. Covered above. In real off road riding, expect about 22 to 31 miles from the X7 and 20 to 25 from the X5. The Sur Ron will go further on a charge, because it is carrying more battery. If you need to ride all afternoon without stopping, that matters.

2. Peak power. 10,000W against 5,500W. On flat ground you will not often use it. On a steep loose climb from a standstill, or at a track where everybody is on Sur Rons, you will feel it. Our 220 N.m of torque on the X7 is genuinely strong for the money, but it is not Sur Ron strong.

3. Suspension and chassis refinement. This is where cheap electrics get caught out. A Sur Ron has a longer travel, better damped front and rear setup. Our bikes have hydraulic disc brakes front and rear and a nitrogen mono shock on the X5, which is honest equipment at the price, but a Sur Ron rides big jumps and whoops better than ours does. If you are jumping, that is not a small thing.

4. The parts and aftermarket ecosystem. Sur Ron has been around long enough that there are shelves of aftermarket parts, controllers, seats, suspension kits and tuning apps. Ours do not have that. If modding the bike is half the fun for you, the Sur Ron is the platform with the community.

5. Resale and paperwork. A used Sur Ron holds value because people know what it is. Official US Sur Rons also come with MCO title paperwork. Our bikes are off road use only, not street legal, and they do not come with a title. If a title matters to you, stop here and buy the Sur Ron.

What you keep at $1,350

You keep most of the actual riding. For backyard riding, dirt lots, desert two track, trails and fire roads, the X7 does what a Sur Ron does. Twist and go, three selectable gears, quiet enough to ride behind a house, hydraulic disc brakes, no fuel to mix, no spark plug, no carburetor.

You keep $3,149. That is not a rounding error. It is a Sur Ron plus a second bike for your kid, or a bike plus gear plus a trailer, or just $3,149.

You keep the option to be wrong cheaply. This is the part people underrate. Plenty of people spend $4,500, ride it six times and sell it. If you have never owned an electric off road bike, finding out for $1,350 is a much better bet than finding out for $4,499.

Who should buy the Sur Ron instead

We would rather lose the sale than sell you the wrong bike, so here it is plainly. Buy the Sur Ron if:

  • You are jumping the bike, riding a motocross track, or riding hard enough that suspension travel is the limiting factor.
  • You want a long ride, several hours, without charging.
  • You want to mod it, and the aftermarket parts shelf matters to you.
  • You want title paperwork, or resale value in two years.
  • You are already riding with a group on Sur Rons and you do not want to be the slow one up the hill.

Who should buy ours instead

  • You want to find out whether you like electric off road riding before spending Sur Ron money.
  • You ride open ground, trails, desert or a dirt lot, not a jump track.
  • Your rides are under about 20 miles, which covers most people most weekends.
  • You are over 265 lbs, which is where the X7 at 330 lbs is the one that fits.
  • You want a quiet bike for a property where a gas engine would get you a complaint.
  • You have $1,000 to $1,400, not $4,500, and you want the most bike that money honestly buys.

X7 or X5, if you are going our way

Short version: the X5 at $975 fits a rider about 4 ft to 5 ft 11 in and up to 265 lbs. The X7 at $1,350 fits up to about 6 ft 3 in and 330 lbs and has the extra torque for hills and sand.

If you are over 265 lbs or taller than 5 ft 11 in, the X7 is not an upgrade, it is the only one of the two that fits you. Everything else is in Sykeruns X5 vs X7, and we wrote up each bike on its own in the X5 review and the X7 review with the real range numbers rather than the factory claims.

What about the other cheap electrics online

You will find a lot of unbranded 3000W and 5000W bikes on marketplace sites for $700 to $1,200. We are not going to pretend ours is magic by comparison, because a lot of them come out of similar factories. What we will tell you to check, on any of them including ours:

  • Battery in watt hours, not just volts. A 72V bike with a 10Ah pack is a worse bike than a 48V with 20Ah. Multiply the two numbers.
  • Who answers when a part breaks. This is the thing that goes wrong with a cheap direct import. Ask before you buy, not after.
  • Max rider weight, published. If a seller will not tell you, assume it is low.
  • Brakes. Hydraulic disc front and rear, or keep scrolling.
  • What arrives in the crate. Ours ship mostly assembled. You put on the front wheel and handlebar at home. Tools and a video are included.

On the parts question, here is exactly what we do, with no spin. Plugged by 50CC does not cover or pay for warranty and we are not the warranty company. If a part is defective, we contact the manufacturer on your behalf and get the correct part sent to you free, for the first year. We are the people who chase the factory so you do not have to. That is not a money back guarantee and we would rather you know that now.

Questions

Is the X7 a Sur Ron clone?

No, and we are not going to call it one. It is a different bike from a different factory at a third of the price, with a smaller battery and less peak power. It does the same kind of riding for a lot less money.

Can I make a cheap electric as fast as a Sur Ron?

You can usually make one go faster. You cannot give it a bigger battery or better suspension with a controller swap, and those are the two real gaps. Tuning a cheap bike also tends to be how people kill the controller.

Are any of these street legal?

Ours are not. Off road use only, not street legal, and they do not come with a title. Sur Ron sells an L1E version in some markets and official US Light Bee X units come with MCO paperwork, which is a different situation from ours. Where you can legally ride either one depends on your state, and we walk through all 50 in where can you legally ride a dirt bike. To find an actual riding spot, start with dirt bike trails near me.

How long do they take to charge?

5 to 6 hours for the X5 and 6 to 7 for the X7, on a normal household outlet with the charger in the box. Getting the most life out of the pack is the main job of owning an electric, and we wrote that up in how to charge an electric dirt bike battery.

Is this for a kid?

No. Gear one on the X5 still does about 15 mph and on the X7 about 25. For a kid, our 50cc gas minis are $300 with a governor screw a parent can turn right down, and the 60cc is $380 for a bigger kid.
