Youth Dirt Bike: Gas for Younger Kids, Electric for Teens

3 min read

Short answer. Youth is a wide word, so pick by rider size first and age second. For a younger kid who fits under 170 lb, our 50cc gas mini is $300, or $350 total with a helmet. For an older youth rider who has outgrown that size, the Sykeruns X5 is $975 and the Sykeruns X7 is $1350. Every bike ships free to all 50 states, and local families can do same day pickup in Tempe.

Why the word youth can mislead you

One family uses youth for a 6 year old. Another family uses youth for a 16 year old. Those two riders need very different bikes. The label on its own tells you almost nothing. Weight, height and riding experience tell you a lot more. Start with our size guide by age and height and our age guide, then match the rider to the bike that fits today with a little room to grow.

Younger youth riders: the 50cc gas mini

For most kids about 5 to 13, the 50cc is the right youth bike. It is a 50cc two stroke with pull start and automatic riding, so there are no gears and no clutch to learn. Top speed is 32 mph, and a parent can set the speed limiter slower for the first rides. We explain that top speed in plain words in our how fast guide.

Colors are black, blue, green, red and yellow, with black and blue the most asked for. The price is $300 for the bike, or $350 total with a helmet. Our safety gear guide covers what a kid should wear, and our cost guide lays out the full price with nothing added at checkout for shipping.

Older youth riders: electric is the step up

Once a rider is over 170 lb, or tall enough that the 50cc feels small, it is time to look at electric. The X5 is 3000W with a top speed of 50 mph. Its three gear steps are about 15, 27 and 50 mph, so a new rider can start slow in gear one. It fits riders about 4 ft to 5 ft 11 in and up to 265 lb, and a charge takes about 5 to 6 hours.

The X7 is 5500W with a top speed of 56 mph. Its three gear steps are about 25, 39 and 56 mph. It fits riders about 4 ft 8 in to 6 ft 3 in and up to 330 lb, and a charge takes about 6 to 7 hours. Pick the X7 for a taller or heavier rider, or for hills and deep sand. Our X5 vs X7 guide puts the two side by side, and our teen electric guide walks through the pick for teen riders.

Gas or electric for a youth rider

Gas is simple and low cost, and you can pour in more fuel and keep riding that day. Electric is quiet, needs a charge before a ride, and costs more up front but fits bigger riders. If you are torn between the two, read our gas vs electric guide before you order. For electric care, our battery charging guide covers how to charge the pack and make it last.

What shows up when you order

Every bike we sell is about 90 percent built. What is left is the front wheel and the handlebar, fitted with the included tools and a video walkthrough. Our setup guide shows the steps for the 50cc, and the fuel mix guide covers the gas and oil mix for that bike. Each bike is off road only and comes with no title. You also get 1 year parts support through the manufacturer, and we help you through that process.

For places to ride, our Arizona riding guide is a good start for local families. When you are ready, read our buying guide for parents, see what a first dirt bike day looks like, or browse the electric collection for the bigger youth riders.
