When you need one
The pull start is the part that takes the most abuse on a mini, because it is the one your kid yanks on. The usual failure points:
- The rope snapped. The most common one by far, and the most obvious.
- The handle pulls out and does not retract. The recoil spring has lost tension or unwound inside the housing.
- It pulls but the engine does not turn over. The pawls that grab the flywheel are worn or broken, so the starter spins without catching.
- It is cracked. Usually from the bike going over on that side.
Rebuilding a recoil starter means fighting a wound spring that wants to take your fingers off. For $29.99 the whole assembly is the easier answer, and you keep the old one for parts.
Before you replace it
Make sure the pull start is actually the problem. A bike that will not start is far more often fuel, the air filter or the spark plug, and none of those are fixed by a new starter.
Work through what to check when it will not start first. If it pulls over normally and fires but dies after a few seconds, that is a carburetor problem, not a starter problem.
The test is simple: pull the cord slowly. If you feel the engine compression resist you and the cord retracts on its own, the starter is fine and the fault is elsewhere.
Fitting it
Three bolts, one wrench, about ten minutes. Take the old one off, line the new housing up on the same three holes, and tighten evenly so the housing sits flat. Do not overtighten, the housing is not thick.
